Early Morning Pacing

Caring, like the hand rubbing the shoulder
 that hurts, the ignored shivering
takes another drag beneath street lamps
 refusing to burn out.

 Silent, unintentional guilt raised
to a shout, accepting no answer but
the one it needs to hear when
a nose is pinched by fingers, wishing
 the baby would stop crying.
